The Skeleton Ranger is an Undead enemy in Dungeon Siege.

Overview[]

This is a mid-level skeleton enemy found in areas where many ancient Empire of Stars soldiers have died. These include Fortress Kroth, the Iliarth Canyon, Hiroth Castle, and Castle Ehb. In semiarid areas, they are complemented by Skeleton Mercenaries and Giant Wasps and Skeleton Krug Dogs, and later by Giant Skeletons in Hiroth. They are suitable for most levels, due to their numbers and XP.

Combat and Tactics[]

This foe has special notoriety among players of the Utraean Peninsula map. Skeleton rangers occupying the route between Lang and Quillrabe are very close to the outskirts of Crystwind, and are therefore in easy reach of new characters. Harassing the skeletons for experience and loot (at great risk of getting holepunched by their Long Backed Bows) seems to be a popular sport.

Newbie tactics against Skeleton Rangers include:

  1. Skirmishing with any ranged weapon. Get within range, fire, dodge enemy arrow, repeat.
    1. With a Range Boost-cast long/punisher crossbow, one vastly outranges the Skeleton Rangers, and players can kill a Ranger without a single response.
    2. In Iliarth Canyon, a boosted-crossbow user can snipe Skeletons and Droog on the cliffs below.
  2. Skirmishing with any ranged spell.
    1. The spells Explosive Powder, Bomb, and Cluster Bomb have physics, and thus can be fired from extreme ranges if used right. The Grenade Launcher shares this trait.
    2. If one casts an Orb spell, he/she can simply run around targets while the orb does its work.
    3. Glyph spells can be used to take advantage of Skeletons' slow speed.
  3. Using other spells to your advantage.
    1. Zorkon's Bonecrusher. A very efficient way to shatter skeletons into harmless pieces, while preserving the loot.
    2. Purity will not only to turn the skeletons away and leave them open to attack, but it will also heal you!
    3. Using high-HP summoning spells as a distraction.
    4. Using Spectral Image/Monster Magnet/Mindflare as a distraction.
  4. Using the town guards to absorb damage.
    1. It can be difficult to drag guards/skeletons the distance from Iliarth Canyon to Crystwind, but is very rewarding at low levels, allowing near-instant level gain.
    2. It is easier in Fortress Kroth and Hiroth, as the guards are very close to the action.

Note: The two guards at the top of Iliarth Canyon will do nothing but watch the player fight.
